At Bunny Haven Rescue, we understand that bonding rabbits can be a sensitive and sometimes challenging process. Because rabbits are highly social - but also territorial - introductions should always be done carefully, patiently, and with close supervision.
Our experienced bonders have 30+ years of combined rabbit bonding experience and work closely with each pair to help create safe, positive introductions tailored to the personalities and comfort levels of the rabbits involved.
For adopters without prior bonding experience, we offer in-rescue bonding services to help safely introduce rabbits and give them the best chance at building a successful companionship.
What is Rabbit Bonding?
Bonding is the process of introducing two rabbits and helping them develop trust, comfort, and companionship with one another. Every rabbit has a unique personality, and some pairs bond quickly while others may take days or even weeks.
Our Bonding Process
During in-rescue bonding:
- Rabbits are housed and supervised by experienced rescue staff
- Introductions take place in neutral territory
- Behavior and body language are closely monitored
- Daily care, feeding, and supervision are provided
- Decisions are made based on the rabbits’ safety, stress levels, and overall wellbeing
Some chasing, mounting, or minor scuffling can be a normal part of the bonding process as rabbits establish boundaries and communication.
Requirements Before Bonding
For the safety and wellbeing of all rabbits involved:
- All rabbits must be spayed or neutered
- Rabbits must be in good health prior to bonding
- Owners must provide accurate medical and behavioral history
- Rabbits must be checked for fleas before entering the rescue
Please note that fleas can come from many sources - including other pets in the home (even indoor-only pets), on clothing or shoes, outdoor exposure, and even hay. To help protect all rabbits in our care, we strongly recommend completing a course of rabbit-safe flea treatment prior to bonding services beginning.
If needed, Bunny Haven Rescue can help provide recommendations, guidance, and general advice on safe flea prevention options before bonding starts.
Important Information
- Bonding outcomes are never guaranteed
- Some rabbits may simply not be compatible
- Minor injuries can occasionally occur during normal bonding behaviors
- Bonding timelines vary depending on the personalities of the rabbits involved
If a bond is not successful, we will work closely with the owner to coordinate next steps and safely return their rabbit(s).
